This is going to sound really corny but as I got off the plane after arriving in Kathmandu and shuttling our way towards customs I had that Bob Seger song in my head the whole time: "I'm going to Kathmandu!". I also had that "where am I and what am I doing here?" feeling. I guess that is just shell-shock.
In any case, there is really something special about Nepal and I think everyone on the plane feels that when we touched down in Kathmandu (despite the pollution of this big city).
Anyways during the flight I managed to score myself a window seat from Delhi to Kathmandu and what I prize seat that was. I mean we're crusing at close to 30,000 feet and you look to the north and you see the Himalayas at close to the same altitude rising out of the clouds. What made it more magical was that we were seeing this as the sun was starting to come up and slowly the mountains would be getting bathed in progressively more morning light. I could not take my eyes off of them. I almost wanted to ask out loud: "Hey is anyone else seeing this besides me?" as the person in front of me and beside me were asleep.
Observing these massive mountains from the plane was a fantastic Nepal introduction for me. So I was still in awe well after the plane had landed.
I was able to meet up with my friend Mazen who was here already so that eased my transition from Canada to Nepal. However, I still haven't got used to the symphony of noises whether it be random vehicles honking or equally random yelling. So far I think I've almost been run over by every manner of vehicle that this city has to offer. Including a mini-bus that has clients literally hanging on (on the exterior of the vehicle) for dear life.
Anyways, I'll get used to it. Afterall, this is all what I love about traveling.
