Flag of Brazil  , State of Rio de Janeiro,
Friday, April 13, 2012

Just as we were beginning to think about home and what were the first things we were going to eat, see, do when we hit British shores Rio came along. There is a beautiful contrast to the city. The beaches are idyllic, the people colourful and the weather warm. But you have always got to have your witts about you as many other tavellers have told us tales of muggings and lost possessions.

Every morning we share our breakfast with little monkeys on the balcony of our hostel over looked by Christ the redeemer in the background. We head to the beaches, soak in the sun and watch with admiration the fantastic skills of the beach footballers (women and men alike). We soak in the atmosphere in the evenings down by the sugarloaf mountain over-looking the atlantic, enjoying cool beers. We visit Christo on his mountain perch and also visit Rosinho favella. It's one of the safer Favellas. A motorbike takes us up to the top of the favella and we are guided down through the narrow sun drenched alleyways, stopping along the way to talk to different characters and look at what community projects have been set up. It is easy enough to feel at ease  but every now and then you see a home that has been demolished by a mud slide and bullet holes in walls where drug gangs and police have collided, demonstrating some harsh realities.

Rio is a special city and a great place to end our travels and even though we are looking forward to seeing loved ones at home it is still a wrench to leave.
