26th April - We arrive in Dali old town after two bus rides using the chinese translations that Cloudlands hostel had noted down for us - without any dramas.

We meet with our tour guide, Jolie. There's an annual festival on in Dali and we go to the market. Here we see different minority groups, including the yi, with their colourful garments. We see all sorts of stalls selling meat, all sorts of vegetables I dont know, chinese medicines (tortoise shells and tiger foot) and burmese jade. We get introduced and have a couple of beers with our guide for tomorrow - Qiaoping (not sure if that's spelt right). He is a tai-chi and Kung fu master an turns out to be an absolute star.

Dali old town is a charming pretty place. It's a bit of a hippie haven too and I can see why. It's laid back, has great weather (pretty much all year round), beautiful surroundings and there seems to be plenty of people selling marijuana - which I thought was quite weird, but apparently yunnan is a bit more laid back than the rest of China. It's also quite strange as it is always old women who sell it. They creep up to you in the street, and whisper in your ear, 'you want ganja'. You look around and it's a wrinkly old woman.
