We have booked a trip in China as we don't know the lingo and have heard that hardly anybody can speak English. Our suspicions are later found to be correct. The trip was supposed to start in Kunming which would have meant us just catching the flight from Hong Kong to Kunming and being picked up at the airport - easy peasy. The tour company however moved the goalposts and said we had to meet them in old town Dali.

Our flight to Kunming from Hong Kong is delayed and we don't have time to catch the overnight train to Dali. At the airport we ring Cloudlands hostel and put them on the phone to a taxi driver to give directions. He then takes us to the hostel. The staff are very nice there and they write down the chinese phrases we need to get to Dali for the next day. (West bus station, express bus please, no. 8 bus etc.)

I don't really have a valid opinion of Kunming, having only passed through. It seems quite a dusty city and possibly less developed than I thought it would be. The only other thing that strikes me is that the traffic is crazy. People rather walk on the road rather than the pavement, scooters, motorbikes, tuc tucs, people, bikes, cars and trucks all vie for their right of way and there is a symphony of tooting.
