During our
stay in the San Sebastián
area, we have twice had the opportunity to walk around and explore this
beautiful city. On the first journey, we
set out from Lasarte (where our friend lives) knowing that there was a good
chance we would get some rain, but we had no idea it would be raining so
much! After the short 10-minute train
ride from Lasarte to the city center, we headed directly for San Sebastian's famous beach called "La Concha".
Up on
arriving on the beach we were greeted with wind and a steady rain, but that did
not keep us from taking a few pictures and stopping to appreciate (or at least
look at) the famous abstract metal sculptures by Eduardo Chillida that are
attached to the rocks on the left side of beach. As soon as we had taken our pictures, the
rain intensified and at times appeared to be coming in from the ocean
horizontally. Soaked, we opted to return
to the city another time and headed back to Lasarte to dry off, warm up and
play some cards, which has now become a favorite pastime of ours when there is
nothing else to do.
Our next
visit to San Sebastian,
however, was much more successful - we even had some sunshine! Our visit started off at San Sebastian's
other beach, Playa de Ondarreta, where we enjoyed the sunshine, watched the
very dedicated surfers try to catch some waves, ate our packed lunches and
Denise and Megan played in the sand.
From the beach we headed to Monte Urgull, which is a hill dividing the
two beaches that is topped by a very old castle and a statue of the man himself, Jesus. The
hike was steep, but the views of the surrounding city and beaches were
phenomenal. After coming down from the
castle, we wondered the streets and looked in various little shops for mementos
from our time here.
That's all
for San Sebastian right now, next up are blogs
from Pamplona and France!
