I've acquired a lift south but it turns out I've barely time to pack my stuff, let alone say my goodbyes to The Goonies and Co. I wrestle my bags away from the clutches of the bedroom Huntsman spider and bolt for the door. I'm ridesharing with a middle-aged Canadian couple called Owen and Megan. First port of call; North- to the airport... the windscreen has a crack in so they're going to exchange hire cars at the Europcar office at the terminal. Not the best of starts but at least I'm going somewhere.
Upgraded to a slightly larger small hatchback we commence the 4 hour trip. I learn about their past ventures when they were younger and find hope that the older generation can still find the time to travel. After taking over the navigation duties, we arrive into Airlie late afternoon
I struck lucky with my lift down here, but I’m only a quarter of the way to Brisbane. Time to put the feelers out again. My first night is spent at The Waterfront Hostel. It’s very quiet but I still get an offer from an Estonian gent (might actually be Ivan Drago from Rocky IV) who hints toward a journey south at some point. And Megan and Owen also offer to let me join them once more as they carry on down the coast, but there not leaving for a at least a few days. Two very nice gestures but urgency and certainty are the key. We exchange emails as a back-up plan but I think I’m going to need a busier hostel to increase the probability of plan A’s success.
Cue an early morning shift of hostels and before I even make it through the door of my new room, I’m greeted by a throng of roommates chilling on the veranda (unsure of the collective pronoun for roommates, sorry.) Turns out a couple of them are heading down to some place near Brisbane in the coming days and I’m welcome to join them- excellent. It’s pretty amazing how things work out.
No Whitsundays. No Whitehaven Beach. No extravagant sailing trips. Just a couple of Kiwi’s called Scott and Tony and an offer to travel south. It’s all I could have really asked for. So after a brief sample of Airlie Beach nightlife, I’m off.
Twelve hour car journey? Go on then.
