Entry 16 of 40 | show all | print this entry

The bus to Valdivia was a few hours late (but at least I was on it this time) and the Chealian `Fruit Police` (They don`t like you taking fruit, vegetable or animal produce ((Including semen which was illustrated by a big Vat with semen written on it on the sign!)) into Chile) seemed to take a lifetime to do their searches at the border. All the faffing meant that I arrived in Valdivia well after dark which I don`t really like doing cause you can look like a bit of a target with your weary eyes and backpack. Armed with my rubbish map I eventually found my (very impressive) hostel and slept.

The next day I explored the town in which I found lots of people covered in paint, flour, fish guts and other assorted nasty things begging for money. I was later told this is what they make all the new university students do over Chile. A Sort of hazing. Sounds a bit better than `Crazy zany cheesy music night` at the student union. I was liking Valdivia then it started to rain stupid amounts and spent the rest of the day trapped in a shopping centre.

The day after (or the day after that...) was St Patricks night - Valdivia has to be the only town in the world without an Irish theme pub (Bariloche had 4!). We went to the fish market and watched the big fat Sea Lions blubbering around waiting for the fishmongers to throw away unwanted fish bits....then we went drinking!

After a couple of bars, a couple of litres of beer and a small siesta we found ourselves at a German brewery on the island off Valdivia....in the middle of nowhere. We sat down to a venison dinner and a litre beer each. It was strange and Englishman, 2 Canadians, American and an Indian at a German brewery on St Patricks night in Chile. After waiting forever to get a bus to take us back to civilisation we all piled into a Taxi in search of more beer. All the bars were rubbish and so went back to the hostel Via the off-licence.

A Day (Or more...) later I got a ticket to Pucon (4 hrs away) and managed to miss the bus (AGAIN!) and so got a later one with the American and 2 English girls from the hostel.

I was now determined not to miss another bus.
