On a lark we were able to sneak on a direct flight to Milan and for all intents and purposes add another day to our time in Italy. We spent a few hours milling about Stazione di Milano Centrale (Milano's central train station) which is a sight to be seen--as Rick Steve's said, "built to make you feel small." We then took the Tirino train to our first stop on this trip Varenna. Varenna is a beautiful town of 800 people on the eastern shore of Lake Como. We are staying in an orphanage turned monastery turned hotel (Eremo Gaudio) perched several hundred feet above Varenna and accessible only by two very strange funiculars. The furnishings are Spartan, but in my mind this is only to not detract from the awe inspiring views.
Steph was wiped out and is taking a nap in our room. I decided to take advantage of this time to explore the town a bit and post this entry in a small bar/Internet cafe/grocer called Al Barilott.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Mike
Addendum:
We spent the evening strolling around Varenna where we seemed to be the only two tourists (at least American tourists). We enjoyed a nice meal at Ristorante Olivedo and a powerful glass of Campiri (a favorite drink of our friend Marie-Louise Martignoni--though her version is a might bit less potent).

Hooray!!!!
Michael and Steph -
So glad to hear that you are safe and already enjoying what seems to be a fantastic honeymoon....and it's only day 1!!!!
Must admit I am jealous (but, in a very good way :) ). Missing my family - all overseas - can't wait to see your photos.
Stay safe and soak it all in.....I know you will!
Love to you both ~ Vicki
