Jeff writes an entry:
We traveled to Bancroft to visit our old Farmhouse neighbours Shane and Beth on Remembrance Day. Easy to remember because the town of Apsley closed the road we were driving on for a memorial service and, unable to continue, we got out of the car to watch the service and remember.

Shane and Beth have been renovating what was once their rugged cottage on a beaver pond into a comfortable primary residence.  I think Mary visited a few years ago when it didn't have running water and a call of nature meant a walk up the hill to use the outhouse.  Now it has all the comforts we have grown so accustomed to including a beautiful wood burning kitchen oven that they use to heat the house and high speed Internet.  It’s true what they say that the world is becoming a smaller place.

After lunch we took a short drive to the start of a walking trail to a lake nearby.  The walk to the lake took about 20 minutes and while we walked Shane mentioned that they have passed many a summer day at the lake over the years swimming and fishing.  In fact for dinner that night, along with many other great things, we had trout that were caught at this very lake – and they were delicious!  We sat by the lake and had a bottle of wine before heading back to the house.  You'll see in the photos that we're all sporting bright orange colours.  It was hunting season and that's the best way to avoid getting shot at while out in the forest.

That evening after dinner we talked, drank some more wine and somehow the topic of a reality TV show called Duck Dynasty came up.  We had a few good laughs watching an episode.  Mary couldn’t resist introducing Shane and Beth to the reality show called Beckman Boys, the show her cousin had introduced to us when we visited them in Maine.  I’m just guessing but I don’t think any new fans of the show were made that night. By now it was past midnight and time for bed.

Perhaps the highlight of our short visit with Shane and Beth was a wee bit of four wheeling in their pick-up truck.  Mary has been telling everyone who cares to listen that she wants to get a Ford F-150 pick-up truck one day so Shane and Beth thought it would be fun to put Mary behind the wheel of their pick up for a little four wheeling.  The four of us (their truck has a back seat) headed down the Old 500 – a paved road that was abandoned in the 1950’s and has mostly been reclaimed by nature.  Mary did well despite being a bit uncertain at first and we all had a laugh when she kept apologizing for the branches scratching past us as we bounced down the narrow 'road’.  After a short stop where our stomachs got a chance to recover, Mary had had enough so I took the wheel for the drive home.  Perhaps no surprise, I was heckled from the back seat for letting so many branches scratch past the side of the truck.  Mary declared herself the clear winner in the four wheeling challenge (ie less branches hit).

All in all a fine visit and it was really nice to catch up with Shane and Beth on their home turf.

I am impressed by the photos you took Mary. I have been trying for 17 years to capture some of those views and you did it in one try! However, just to let other readers know, the photos of the 4-wheeling "road" didn't quite capture the ruggedness of the drive (which caused Mary to use a few "impolite" but appropriate expletives - albeit quietly). We did have a lovely hike to Byers Lake (about a 30 minute walk- Jeff was just so busy talking with Shane that time flew by). Good wine, good times. Safe travels!

Thanks Beth however I can't take full credit for all the photos. Jeff took the shot that I used to capture the spirit of Bancroft. It was a fun time and we enjoyed hanging out with you and Shane. Thanks again for being wonderful hosts!!
