It had been 15 years since I last saw my Mom's family. The purpose of that trip was to introduce Jeff to my family and for Jeff to see some of the beautiful things that Poland has to offer. Although I have kept in touch via letters and the occasional phone call, I was a bit nervous coming back to meet my family after all these years. When we arrived, my nervousness was for naught. My family welcomed us with open arms and open hearts. We were immediately well taken care of with each family member ensuring that we always had enough food and drink with any visit we made. This warm hospitality that the Poles are known for can be good and bad. Good in that you will never go home hungry, bad in that you tend to overeat. "No thank you" is not an acceptable answer when the Polish specialties and drinks are being laid out on the table. Fortunately Jeff and I learned our lessons well from our last visit with my family – we sampled each of the dishes presented to us ensuring we always had enough room to still eat something that would be offered at the next home we would be visiting
Over the years, some changes have naturally occurred – family members getting older, more additions to the families (lots of young kids to play with and have fun with) as well as some family members who have passed away. This is the cycle of life as they say.
It was fun getting reconnected with my family members. We promised each other to keep in better touch (access to the internet and the social networks that are now available should make things easier to stay in touch). We said our goodbyes (with a few tears exchanged by myself and some of the members of my family) and got back in our car for our drive to Berlin, Germany (our last stop in Europe).
