Cycling back, the sun had done its job already and the Alps appeared again all around us with wisps of cloud candy-flossing the slopes. As I write this at 2pm Swiss time it's again scorching hot. We are relaxing for the remainder of today ready for our onward journey tomorrow across the Simplon Pass into Italy. I am saddened to leave Switzerland so soon but will return briefly as we make our way back to Calais on our journey home after visiting the Italian lakes.
After a day of excessive heat yesterday we went to the small restaurant on site for our anniversary dinner, we both settled on Alpine herdsman macaroni, which was for all the world rather like macaroni cheese but with onions, cream and potato added. Very nice until we came to pay and they do not accept debit cards however the very trusting waitress said we could pay the next day with Swiss francs once we had been to the bank. Heavy rain in the night convinced me that it would be a little cooler today and as we woke the Alps all around us were shrouded in foggy mist. We set off for the small town of Susten and immediately went to the cash machine for 50 swiss francs to cover our debt. Minutes after this Mike found that he did not actually have the 50 francs and hot-footed it back to the machine, where he had no joy at all. After doing grocery shopping we returned to the bank to explain our plight. The counter clerk who spoke only a little English was charming explained that if customers don't take their money then the machine takes it back (fab system) and checked and found that this had happened and the 50 francs would return to the account from whence it came! Phew!!
