Romania was where changes from Western Europe were first seen: the people were distinctively different in appearance, horse and cart was common site, and buildings were generally more dilapidated. The first evening we found ourselves adventuring down small country roads to find a bushcamp. After spying one in a small valley and setting up, a local farmer invited us for some Pallinca (lethal plum brandy) and some sizzled pork from an open fire. His wife was drunk and shouting 'Pallinca! Pallinca!'. The farmer was actually a member of some sort of local government. They didn't speak a word of English but we had a very entertaining night nonetheless.

Another night was spent by the camp fire before we arrived in Bucharest, Romania's Capital. As like much of the rest of Romania half of it appeared to be in construction. I presume this is due to money freed up by entry into the EU in January. Bucharest was the busiest city so far, a complete contrast to the slow pace of the rest of the country, every street full of cars and people. The atmosphere helped to make up for lack of attractions. There was a very big attraction though: The Palace of Parliament, the second biggest building in the world (next to the pentagon)! Unknowingly we were viewing its smallest elevation and even that was amazing. I would like to visit Bucharest in the future and see how the development has changed the city.
