Everything about microcredit and microfinance (microfinance includes additional financial products besides credit/loans - such as health insurance, life insurance, etc) is about enabling people to move out of poverty.  My new friend in Hyderabad (who I will blog on later) put it this way "it is about providing the poor choices."

I have been deeply involved with discussions of how one defines poverty and measures progress out of poverty.  These range from the very simple Grameen 10 indicators (roof over head, food, clothing, school, clean water, latrines, etc) to a very complex statistical formula.

But after having visited a number of villages and carefully observed the borrowers - I have a new one - the "Marty Jenkins Countenance/Radiance Indicator."  I particularly noted the leaders in each of the villages - and I concluded that the members of the group could be randonmly seated - and one could pick out the leader of the group - purely by observing the countenance and radiance of the women.   I discussed this with Vikash and Niranjan and they felt that this is a correct observation.  To watch these leaders glow and act so confident is amazing and I feel a true testiment to the empowerment that microcredit provides.

Included are pictures of village meetings, members and some of their businesses.

Marty, your blog is wonderful and so informative, I love what you are doing and the ways in which you are doing it!! The photos on your site are breathtaking and heartwarming. I absolutely love your new indicator of progress: the Radiance Indicator!!! You are absolutely right on with this and what a beautiful way to share it with the world. Continue to let your love radiate out across the world bringing peace, contentment, and joy, and in turn those whom you touch in this way will radiate with that same vibrant life (as the women village leaders do), and they will in turn cause others to radiate with this sameness raising the world up as they go. Shine Brightly, My Friend and safe travels!!!

Re: Radiance
Hi Stacy - it is good to hear from you and thank you for your nice comments/feedback. I hope all is well with you.

This is indeed a very extraordinary experience - by far the most significant of my life. Traveling alone allows me to learn and connect in a far more meanigful and deep way than if I was traveling with someone - although at first it was a bit scary.

I look forward to you further feedback on my blog.
