We re-met Garry and Kathy on Main Street whilst heading for our breakfast and they said we should look them up if we got down into Louisiana - to be honest we weren't quite sure of the surname or the place and wished we'd taken better details. We've named him Huckleberry and sure hope he doesn't mind because it's meant in a friendly way.

We had our usual bagel and crap coffee before heading on along Hwy 550 thru some further roadworks across another huge mountain. It only took us about an hour to get to Silverton which is in a small valley with mountains all around - it is beautiful. We stayed in the Grand Imperial which is an old hotel in the centre of this small town (on Greene Street) and were made very welcome by the elderly receptionist. Our room wasn't ready and we set off to find the train-station.

The ticket office is slightly out of town where a wonderful lady provides tickets with real attitude - loved it. We couldn't take the train down to Durango and back by bus as that service ended today - so we brought tickets to take the train up from Durango first thing leaving the car at the train station and then go back the next day on the train to collect the car staying over in Durango.

Just after we'd got our tickets the train was coming in and we stood by the track waving as it went by - the train stops in the middle of a street in the middle of town, so wild west.

We then moved into our lovely corner room with dual aspect over the mountains followed by a walk around the town and a beer in the hotel bar where there is a lovely young lady who plays old time tunes on a piano. A snooze was then necessary and later on we went out and got an excellent meal in Handlebars.

This place is perfect - small with dirt back streets and amazing scenery wherever you look.

bizarre - the Google map satellite image of where you're staying shows the place deep in snow. Looks lovely, though.
