Got the tent away dead easy, packed and off by 9.45am. We headed for Riverton driving up the Wind River Canyon - it is spectacular, especially when compared to the top and found a high desert environment improved only by the huge Boyson reservoir.
Lunch was at Dubois half way along highway 26 which was very cute and MJ decided to buy a full sized Pecan pie at the local County Store. They had a stuffed 8 foot Jackalope which we decided was too corny to be worthy of a picture, albeit we were sure at least half of you would have been convinced.
We drove and drove with a great view of the Tetons in the distance. It did however get all a little much (we may at last have found our scenery-limit).
About 20 miles from the Park we crossed the Continental Divide (water on the east runs out in New Orleans on the Mississipi into the Gulf while water on the west runs out at Astoria on the Columbia in Oregon) at 9,600 feet. There was still snow on the mountain tops and when we were there the temp was 52F.
The Park is excellent with this huge range of mountains which have been formed by a fault line pushing the west side up but more by pushing the east side down more than 3 times more. Jackson Hole at the south of the range is on the east side. The Snake River runs along the road.
We then had to climb out of Jackson up the west side of the mountain. Our 2.4L mid-sized Toyota Corolla struggled big time - a combination of low oxygen and a crap US engine.
The hotel is fine albeit rather expensive for what it is - there appear to be approx 6 people staying but they still want $70 for tomorrow night.

More Wind River (we like it)
