Where I stayed

Needed that sleep so much. Strange then that I managed to stay up till 10pm because I was broken tired. Even stranger that post napping after the tour Kate managed to stay up till 10pm also. What film kept our attention, and even more unlikely, Kates attention from the temptations of sleep? The Expendables.

Don't get your knickers in a twist - it's ok, I agree. It's a terrible film. Thats the reason I was drawn into watching it - it managed to do in one sweet single hit, damage to the careers of excellent action filmers such as Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Stallone on a par with the damage done to Arnie filming 'Twins' and 'Kindergarten Cop'. A true stinker of a film. Well done Stallone on looking like a old plastic toy throughout the film also.

On waking I look over at the alarm clock set by Kate last night. I press the snooze button, we've got plenty of time. 1hr 45 minutes till the bus. 5 minutes later when the alarm goes off again I repeat the process. 1hr 40 mins. I repeat another 5 times, just not wanting to get up and then eventually I give Kate a shove and suggest it's time we go and get some breakfast before making a move to the bus stop. 1hr 15mins to the bus.

A little tired, I start putting my bits and pieces into my bag and plug in the laptop to get some more juuice in it - every little helps. I grab the key and then we head out the door to the promise of food. Kate stops, turns grey and then says "It's not 5 to 9, it's 5 to 10".

"What?! What?"
"It's 5 to bloody 10"
"Then the bus leaves in 15 minutes"
"How did that happen?" (Kate)
I look at my watch and it's the right time. Realisation dawns.
"You set the bloody alarm but you didn't change the time!" I say as I run back into the room and start wrapping things up in lightning time.
We ran down the stairs of the old place with bags in tow and I dumped the sheets next to the desk, panting out of breath.
"We're a little in a rush, sorry" I say remarking on the fact we now have 7 minutes till our bus which has always without fail arrived early at it's destination.
"Thats ok, you're only just past 10 - not a problem" the desk lady remarks on the basis that we should have checked out at 10am.
"Well thats not what I meant, but anyways..." I say grabbing my small deposit for the crappy film watched last night and exiting stage left onto the street.

I dart for the bus, storming off 20 paces ahead of Kate. I round the final corner to the bus stop, mere seconds off 10.10 and our bus departure time and I slow down to a ponder. Breathing heavily, I dump the bags down next to the seat of the bus stop. Kate arrives and plonks her stuff next to mine.

At the bus stop, 6 other people are waiting. We have made it in time - the bus hasn't been yet. Thank god.

3 and a quarter hours later and the bus pulls in to pick us up. He had broken down, 2 and a half hours away up the coast. Without any stops, they powered down to us and then after apologising to us and picking us up onwards to Sydney. The film was Avatar but I couldn't really hear it. The one time they manage to put a good film on, they make it as quiet as a whisper - but when they put on a soppy film about a dog named Marley, it's in stereo surround sound.

The delay was nobodys fault. It just added to my contempt of the bus service. Trains seem to be the way forward.

Sydney is 18 degrees and sunny. For us, it feels like walking into mid-winter. We need some warmer clothes before hitting New Zealand just a couple of weeks down the line, and certainly before hitting the states in early December.
