We finally arrived in Bermuda after the blue rubber glove treatmant in LUX, LA Airport! Swiftly followed by many bag searches both in LA and Bermuda, we finally touched ground on Bermudian soil, only to discover that the Bermuda triangle really does exist!!! As after 15 minutes of waiting for my rucksack to appear (Had Martins already) and us being the last ones out of the immigration queue we realised it was not coming out. So some form filling was done and off we finally went to meet Fi (we hoped she would still be there after all the waiting etc...).
Beautiful sunshine was there to greet us, and of course the beautiful Fiona as always (Heike's pal). So that was very much welcomed after the missing rucksack saga. We were taken on a drive along the coast from the airport along to the other end of the island where Fi and Gareth now live near the Railway Trail. It truly is a beautiful area and you can see why they have chosen to come out here and live with the two boys growing up fast! There's always plenty to do and see with the great pink sandy beaches (South Shore Beach is the most famous for it's pink sands) and snorkelling on the reef, you can see countless Sea Cucumbers, Sea Urchins and Fish (Guppies and Sergeant Majors etc...) out there as well as close inside the bays. Further out there's plenty of diving around the countless shipwrecks surrounding the Archpilegos (I know I can´t spell anymore!!). We went out kayaking, and saw some big fish underwater on the one decent and calm day we had to do it (this Kayaking lark is becoming a bit of a habit). The weather in Bermuda can be very interchangeable, although it can be very sunny at this time of year, it can also be pretty windy, big time, as it has been whilst we have been here.
We've been out walking on some of the local routes, exploring the local flora and fauna, Fi and Gareth have taken us to a lot of places and been excellent hosts as ever. It is a great place for family life and so chilled out and relaxing. The local aquarium and Maritime Museum are excellent and very informative as to the very nature of Bermuda and how it was formed many, many years ago. The rucksack (am still miffed about it can you tell), finally arrived after four days of us calling the Airline and constantly chasing them about it (travel for 6 months around half the worlds circumference, and we get to the states for them to lose our gear!!). But then we had to wait for it to come by Taxi, I was very relieved as it's not so much the insurance hassle but more the irreplaceable bits such as our video footage and CD's with all our pics on them. Plus Martins B.day pressies, as he hit 41 on the day we arrived in Bermuda, not many people remembered (bless him so he's feeling a little neglected now, ahhh...).
As well as doing the old walks (yes we´re taking it a tad easy at this stage and reflecting upon the last six months worth of adventures), we´ve been exploring the limestone caves of which there sare many and have only recently been accessible to the public, due to mass clearing up of the area after last years hurricanes! They are just amazing to see and we went thro´a few although atorch is most handy to have. Some of them are so deep that you can really see the colour change in the water there. If you dive, it´s well worth going too as you can see loads of fish and Bermuda has a high number of Ship wrecks, due to being caught out on the reef which surrounds the entire island almost!!. We saw quite a few and quite big too. the variety of marine life out here is just wild and we´ve seen it in the lesser busy months where it may be a tad cooler, but we really have enjoyed it out here. definately a place to visit if you like the sea world...
Big thankyou´s to Fi, Gazz, Cam and Ben too for having us to stay we were nicely had!!! Will see you in the next two years agian!!! More thumbnails ...

That's so cool (reply) Jan 31, 2008 11:26 EST by starlagurl
You guys know how to live it up in the islands! Appreciating the local flora and fauna as unobtrusively as possible is the best way to explore a new place.
