We had made it to "EVEREST BASE CAMP", the last 7 km a steep walk with a Tibetian family the ladies who were very interested in Heike's sun cream; but jumped and shreaked when the pump action spay was let loose. The men just smiled and kept rotating their prayer wheels.
We left the family at a monastery and found our way to the base camp or basic camp!!!
Everest looked magnificent in the bright sunshine even though base camp is a bit of a drab barren disappointment itself.
We stayed at the Hotel Califonia (Well a large tent with a stove and a card playing owner with a sence of humour. It got very cold that night, but the owner tucked us in beneath the pile's of Yak hair blankets deposited on us!!!! (eveybody 9 of us comented it was just like our mother's being there) Despite waking a couple of time's with a 5200 meter banging head ache it was one of the best nights sleep we had had in a while.
Next morning we saw the sun rise on the big fella and set about a little problem.
The Chinese bless em will not let you any futher without paying 200 dollars and you know the view is going to be better just around that next corner!!
So we did what all reponsible law abiding citizens would do, we snuck around the ticket office and when no one was looking made a dash for it.
I point out a dash at that altitude has more of the "Chariots of Fire about them rather than a Linford Christi!!!.
