We (Ben I met in Palenque and I ) arrived in San Christobal late, maybe midnight or so. We took a taxi and gave him a list of possible hostels where we could stay. After knocking on about 6 doors to find them all booked up we managed to find two places at the same time. We picked the one that was the obviously better deal. Private room, private bathroom, slightly cheaper. Anyway, I met some great characters there, an italian guy who was travelling around the world, roughly the reverse route of mine except that he had already been travelling for 5 years and had run out of money in India. He decided at that point that he would try to travel without money at all. Therefore he only takes donations of food etc. and will only work in exchange for accomodation or transport. He told us that he has learnt two important things, first is that the world is not a pretty place and that really there is no hope for mankind as a whole. Meaning that there will always be wars and murder etc. The second was that money and material goods are so ridiculessly unimportant, if you appeal to people in the right way they will help you out and that is all you need to survive
I spent time looking around the town. Drank some of the rather nice coffee and looked at the colonial buildings and churches. The pace of life up there in the hills is much slower than the rest of mexico. It really lets you relax. We looked around a large market and Ben bought himself a fine hammack and a poncho and some other things that you need to bring back after travelling in South America. I bought nothing. I had just seriously lightened my bag and I liked things as they were, I didn't see the need to add any weight to the bag until Icould think of something that I needed.
Ben left the day before me so I had a day on my own to walk around and take pictures of things also to try to organise some things. Buy some medicine to replace the stuff I had used or given away out of my first aid kit. Check my flights and accomodation etc. I drank some coffee, went online. And towards the end of the day sat and practised spanish. You would think I would be getting good by now. But not yet. Soon though. I then took the ngiht bus back to Mexico DF.

. He had an amazing story and it really put my little holiday to shame. I would love to travel like he has but I don't think it is in me. I had already decided that my sleeping bag was not really getting used enough to warrant the weight it added to my bag. And so I gave it to him to make better use of.I spent time looking around the town. Drank some of the rather nice coffee and looked at the colonial buildings and churches.
