9th to August - Amazing sunset in Hokitiki

We were doing quite well with our time left in NZ so we decided to have an extra stop in Hokitiki just over an hours drive from Greymouth. It is a small town renowned for its Greenstone (a green stone that is very significant to the Maori culture - the carved green stone is now worn by Maori, Kiwi and tourist) carving and as we found out it also has a lovely beach. After a cheeky morning nap we headed out on a gorgeous sunny day for a walk around the town and to the beach. We walked right along the beach checking out the stones and shells there and just admiring the great view. The sand and sea on one side and the Southern Alps on the other. Seeing as we were in a Greenstone region we thought we would check out the beach for any. When we found lots of 'green stones' we thought we were pretty lucky, we later found out that they were in fact another stone called Levrite and that Greenstone is very rare now in New Zealand.

That evening we went to the beach to watch the sunset and i have to say I think one or the most beautiful one I have ever seen. On the horizon the sun was setting and the sky was fire red and orange and then when you turned around you cold see the Alps and the moon rising over them while the sky there was turning pink and purple. It was just so amazing.

9ter August - Hokitiki
