I arrived in Geelong today. Wow, what a long ride. My ankles are SO swollen! The town is nice, it is on Corio Bay in southeastern Australia about 45 minutes west of Melbourne.
So, if you're interested, I received a scholarship and am here working at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory for 3 weeks. The facility has extremely strict biosecurity practices- nothing besides you goes in, you wear their clothing, you shower out and cannot have livestock contact for 7 days after being on the "secure" side. The purpose is to learn about (and work with) diagnostic tests used and being developed for diseases like Lyssa virus (in bats), Hendra and Nipah virus (horses, people, bats), Rabies, Foot and Mouth Disease, SARS, Bluetongue disease, Avian Influenza, Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, Wallal Virus, etc. I have learned a lot so far and look foward to learning more as the weeks go on!
