Road trip part 2 - Adelaide to Melbourne

This part of the trip was to take us five days in total.
Aha... and here we arrive in wine tasting country, well, one of the many wine regions that the country has to offer. Pat had the training (his previous trip to Hunter Valley) and a taste in his mouth for free alcohol. So aloft our trusty steeds, push bikes, in the midday sun and off in search of wine to quaff. This was to be more of a fitness test than a wine test. Each winery was a fair distance from the other and instead of wobbling along with pink cheeks feeling merry from the fountain of grapes, we were red faced and guzzling water to replace the fountain of sweat! We did decide to take a few bottles home with us to savour over dinner. The heat of the day continued into the night and just like the wine we were not chilled. A cool 40 degrees with no breeze!
The following morning, feeling a little weary, we set off to our next destination, but not without a few stops at some very important landmarks to Australia. The Giant Rocking Horse ( the biggest in the world) and The Giant Lobster! These are sights to behold. We both climbed the Rocking Horse to feel its dizzying heights, being that it is in the Guinness Book of Records, the nerd instinct in Pat kicked in and he reveled in its facts. The Lobster, although large, was not as impressive as the Rocking Horse and we quickly moved on. Traveling along the road you get a real sense of how hot this part of the country is. Huge lakes that spanned out like oceans, were now reduced to dusty Sahara's with no sign of ever being the oasis that they used to be.
Another beautiful day awoke us. Wiping the sleep from his eyes, with a full belly of fuel, and an eagerness for the road, Jethro transported us to The Great Ocean Road with a colourful little smile on his face. This was a truly breathtaking drive for two reasons. The first is the spectacular views that unfold round each corner ....even better than the last one, and the second is that if you are the driver....its a life threatening experience...it's all you can do to keep your eyes on the road, the very twisty road, that if you are not careful you could end up in the boot of the car in front, lorry coming in the opposite direction or off the edge of the cliff! Oh and there is the wild life that could jump out at you at any time. So really you have quite a tough job being the driver.
As we travelled a little further along the route we saw people parked at the side of the road, curiosity drew us to look at what was happening (rubbernecking, as it is technically called), and there they were. Koala's. Real life wild Koala's, just sitting there in the trees at the side of the road not really bothered that they have now gathered quite a crowd and traffic hazard below them, compiled of eager tourists happily snapping the Koala's better sides. They were definitely working it for the camera. They were too high up to cuddle or swipe to pop in the rucksack. For the next 270km spectacular view after spectacular view was upon us. This road is truly the drive of your life.
