Sydney is an amazing city. Full of opportunity, fun and scenery. Like London, there are bars and restaurants of every culture alongside parks and squares where you can wile away the hours with a good book, a bottle of wine and a picnic overlooking the stunning architecture of the Opera House and the beautifully clear waters of the harbour. The bonus......, sunshine, long sunny days. From Manly we traveled across the water on one of the many ferries that cross the harbour frequently. This gives excellent views of the city, passing boats, the bridge and the Opera House. We had decided to treat ourselves to a tour of the Opera house and walks around the city. It was while we were here we bought our tickets for New Years Eve....watching a concert in the main hall, the fireworks, free champers and nibbles then private party isn't something you do every year you know.....although it does need to work hard to compare with Alison's' (Pats' mum) New Year Party!
The Opera house is very different to how we imagined it. The internal walls are just concrete posts and not painted which you would think they would be....however, the furniture and furnishings are new and modern. The Opera House was designed through opening up a competition to the public and after 350 entries they finally decided on a Danish entry. The problem was that architects struggled to build the design as technology had not encountered such a design before.
A brief history:
Planning for the Sydney Opera House began in the late 1940s and formal construction of the Opera House began in March, 1959. The project was built in three stages. Stage I (1959-1963) consisted of building the upper podium. Stage II (1963-1967) saw the construction of the outer shells. Stage III consisted of the interior design and construction (1967-73).

Since this initial visit to Sydney we have returned a few times and each time we fall in love with it more and more. The fact that the city is on the water adds a whole different perspective to the city. We have spent time wandering around the city and getting to know it a little bit more. However, there is still so much to see and do here
