Today Nathan, Lindsay, Ashley, Jenna, Nuno, Maria, Sarah and I all went down to the school here in Santa Rosa. Nathan, Lindsay and Ashley all played games with the children and when they were done, Jenna and I taught them some English. Jenna taught the younger kids aged 6-9 and I taught the older kids. Jenna was teaching them their numbers 1-10. Nuno was mostly in charge with Jenna just demonstrating how to pronounce the words. I had some problems with Nuno's technique. These kids are young and their attention span isn't that long, but Nuno was getting frustrated with the kids just because they were fidgeting. Kids do that, just continue teaching and ignore it. Also, I think the overall time spent on 1-10 was far too long. Either the overall session with the younger kids needs to be shorter, or they need a new subject half-way through.
After Jenna, it was my turn to teach the older kids. We went into the classroom and introduced outselves, and as soon as Nuno told them to form a circle on the floor, all the girls jumped up and ran to me. I had about four girls hanging off my arms. It was adorable. We taught them 1-15 first. Almost all of them knew 1-10, so 11-15 was the only new material for them. I really think they should have been taught 11-20 only, instead of 1-15 when they already knew 1-10. We did play a fun game though where Sarah's team had to say one, my team said two, her team said three, and onward to see whose team could keep it going
longer. This was a very fun and age-appropriate game for them to play. After that, we taught them the alphabet and then headed back to the reserve. We all hammocked for a little bit and then went to work building a worm bed. The other group who hadn't gone to the school had gone far up into the reserve looking for signs of the spectacled bear (oso). They left around 10 in the morning and didn't return until around 2:00. I wish I was able to go on that hike with them, but I really enjoyed working with the kids.
