Banana pancakes again today! Today is Kayla's birthday. She and Nuno went into town in the morning to get supplies and so Kayla could call her parents. They left soon after breakfast, and the rest of us sat around for a while. Breakfast was later than usual, so we started work a lot later. We worked in the nursery all day long. It was very boring. We weeded, and weeded some more. We did get to play in the worm culture, taking the worm waste (good soil/fertilizer) and moving it over to the nursery for the plants. That's really all we did all day long. Kayla and Nuno came back from town soon after we finished work. Last night, I was up late writing my journal. It was just Nuno and I awake, and he told me the plans he had for Kayla's birthday. We were all going to chip in and buy her a cabulla purse, and Nuno was going to get a birthday cake from town. Luckily, Kayla didn't notice him buying it. At lunch time, Capri and I wrapped her gift and made a bouquet of flowers for her. Dinner time was when we were going to surprise her with her gifts. After supper, Nuno, Capri and I snuck away to get things ready. We surprised her with her cake and sang happy birthday to her while Nuno played the song on his violin. She was so surprised! I'm glad we were all able to do something for her out here, away from her family. She turned 20 today. Also just found out that I am the oldest of the ISV Alto Choco Volunteers here. :-)

That was one of the other things we talked about in discussion last night, was if the reserve could cater to our interests. Some people came here interested in reforesting, others to work with kids, and some were really looking forward to working with the bears. I said that our project overview contained all of these tasks and said that we could be working on these things. As a volunteer, we should be ready to do whatever the reserve needs us to do. So even though I found weeding today to be boring, it needed to be done, so I did it without question.
