Although Flores is beautiful, and Iīm sure I could have spent some time swimming or kayaking in the lake, I was there for a different reason--to visit the ruins of Tikal. Iīd already seen quite a few ruins, but Tikalīs one of the must-sees in Guatemala, so I had to do it.
I decided to take a tour this time, as I havenīt really had a guide take me around any of the other ruins. The tour was based around the archaeology and nature that surround the site. Our guide, Luis, knew where to find all of the hidden wildlife in the park, including more birds than I can remember, a crocodile, tarantulas, and spider and howler monkeys. We alo climbed all the major temples, at one point coming up to teh same level as a family of howler monkeys. Surrounded by so much wildlife and flora, it was difficult to believe that the whole area was exposed when the Maya were living there. They had cut down all the trees in the surrounding area.
