Caye Caulker was a peaceful little island where laying in a hammock can occupy entire days! I spent quite a few hours just laying about in front of my hostel, which, happily, was on the beach. When I was not in a hammock I was in the water, swimming in the incredibly blue-green waters of the Split with my fellow gringos. The Split is a new channel dividing the island in two (it was formed by a hurricane a few years ago). I also took a snorkeling trip on a sailboat, swimming with all kinds of fish, nurse sharks, sting rays, eagle rays, and even a few sea turtles. At night I quickly learned that the thing to do is go to the Jolly Roger, which is basically Roger at a grill with a few picnic tables around him. The menu is simple--fresh lobster or barracuda with lots fixins, drinks, and dessert. I tried both (on different nights) and they were delicious.
I thought it would be cool to start taking photos of each place I stayed, as they are so different--ranging from downright depressing (in other words, just a bed) to cute little houses in prime locations. On Caye Caulker, I stayed at Tinas Hostel, which was right on the beach, had a garden full of hammocks, and was about 100 meters from where the water taxi dropped me off. At night I fell asleep listening to the wind blow through the palm trees in the garden.
