My camera is giving me trouble uploading photos from my card, so this entry will have to be just text for today. I will try to add photos later. Mexico has been great so far. James and I started in Mexico City, touring the Anthropological Museum, the cathedral, and looking for the ultimate street food for a couple of days. Then we traveled to Palenque, where despite the heat and humidity, we climbed up the jungle ruins. From our hotel in Palenque, we heard and saw a mother howler monkey with her baby. Apparently, the mom serves as an alarm clock for the tourists by making the most unearthly sounds imaginable at about 8 a.m. each day.
From Palenque we traveled to Merida, an old colonial town that was built on top of an abandoned Maya city. The buildings in the main square were constructed from the stones of the old Maya buildings. Merida is a laid back place that serves as a base for day trips to sinkholes, the beach, ruins, and more. We stayed in the city most of the time, but also traveled to Progresso, a nice beach town where James and I attempted to erase the gringoness from our skin. It worked better for James than for me, probably because heīs not a full gringo.
Sadly, James had to get back to work, and he left for Portland on Sunday. Since then, I have just been taking it easy in Tulum. Itīs very much a beach bum hang out. Yesterday, I toured the Tulum ruins, which are built on a cliff overlooking the ocean. A beautiful place to swim and walk about, but the coolest part were the iguanas that call the ruins their home. I spent a large part of the day taking photos of these creatures, which is pretty easy because they arenīt afraid of people and they donīt move much anyway.
Anyway, thatīs it for now. I hope to have photos uploaded soon!! Only a couple more days in Mexico and then Iīm headed south to Belize! Hope all are well.
