Doolin Cave

With heads feeling slightly heavier than normal we packed our bags and headed for the famous Doolin Cave, home to one of the worlds longest Stalactite. We got on the first available tour and took the 120 steps down to the very bottom of the cave. It was quite surreal as we descended down, everything got darker and cooler and as you looked up you realised just how far down into the earth we were going! Once at the bottom we got our hard hats on and started climbing further into the earth. It was a good thing we had the hats as I kept hitting my head on the roof as it fluctuated in height every few meters. Our guide finally led us to a pitch black area and told us to look ahead and as he switched on the lights a magnificent giant thing shone from the roof way above our heads. It was hard to believe we had just walked all this way through narrow little streams of water to this massive cave that was almost 30 meters below the earths crust. This thing had been growing for millions of years, absolutely incredible!!!

Once we had a taken a few photos and checked out a few of the other chambers we headed on back to the car and began our drive to Athlone via Galway. Galway was a bit random, but we still enjoyed a little walk around the town while we stopped for a quick snack. While on our way to Athlone we had a call from the hotel we would be staying at that night. Apparently they had double booked us and were calling to tell us while we were on the way to their hotel! We had booked the hotel earlier on in the morning and apparently someone walked in at the same time while the room was available and they let the customers that had walked in have our room. So we were then left hotelless for a few minutes while the man sorted us out somewhere else to stay. In the end it all worked out ok and we ended up staying at some random hotel/pub a little bit out of Athlone.

It was about dinner time so we unpacked the car and headed out to find somewhere nice, however everything seemed to be a little overpriced. We ended up settling for some yummy Indian food that we took back to our little pub and ate it while we watched Usain Bolt win the 100m final. We finally settled down quite early in the evening and hit the hay for our final leg of our Ireland road trip. It was a funny sleeping arrangement as we only had single beds in each room and each room only had 2, so Holly and Giv decided to have a girls night in and Adam and I took the two singles upstairs.
