It's beautiful. Like - really beautiful. Silly beautiful. Like - stupidly, ridiculously beautiful. A kind of 'oh come on, you've got to be kidding' kind of beautiful. I've only been here a short time, following a 2 day journey of death from Hong Kong - but already I'm completely enchanted by this place. Despite the hordes of tourists, both Chinese and Western, descending upon Yangshuo for the week long May holiday, the town is incredibly calm once you head into the countryside. The first thing I saw this morning was the grand, dramatic, solitary beauty hill, almost as if its presence had woken me. And now, as I sit upon green Lotus Peak, avoiding the tropical rain, I can see peak after peak rolling into cloud after cloud. For anyone that's been to Halong Bay - it's kinda like that except, for me, so much more amazing (and I never thought I would say that). It seems, however, that I have developed the syndrome where you can't stop taking pictures - you know - like Japanese tourists. Every amazing scene that I come across seems to demand a new photo, even if it is only a mere variation of the last. Therefore, expect numerous photos of Moon Hill and Green Lotus Peak, the rice fields around Yangshuo. Yes - they all look the same.

You know what's brilliant? Cyling along dirt paths amongst silly beautiful scenery. Cycling? brilliant. Dirt paths? Average, bumpy, wet but fun. Silly beautiful scenery? Brilliant. Living the dream... You know what's a bitch though? Terrential rain. Warm terrential rain. The decision to get rid of coat-master-coat is looking better all the time. Today, I stood for 2 hours in the middle of nowhere, my umbrella protecting my bag more than my self, but at least surrounded by silly beautiful scenery. I managed to extract from a policeman (in mandarin) that it always rains like this. AVerage...

Whilst on the topic of my talents in speaking mandarin, I am glad to report that my chinese vocabulary is steadily increasing. Today, at the hairdresser, I learnt that the word 'short' in English seems to mean 'give me a shit haircut' in Mandarin. Mental note. I'm at least glad that mum has been able to monitor the length of my hair by the uploaded photos, and reported in when she was of the opinion that it was getting too long. Thanks mum.

And so, having climbed a series of peaks and cycled around forever, with the intention of seeing further peaks and spectacular caves in the forthcoming days, I now upload photos. A warning: these photos have the potential to induce tremendous jealousy. They are, after all, silly beautiful.

And so, to the Top 5. Well, having copped out so blatently in Guangzhou, I thought I would fulfil the musical requirement, belatedly nonetheless. Top 5 songs describing the first days in Yangshuo:

5. Another day in Paradise - Phil Collins
4. Cloud Factory - Clouds
3. River of Dreams - Billy Joel
2. Summer Rain - Belinda Carlisle
1. The First of May - BeeGees

More to come from silly beautiful Yangshuo...
