Yesterday the internet was down , hence no entry. I know. I can hear your disappointment from here! I was not meant to be teaching till Monday, but caroline ahd to go into town in search of a fax machine/computer/anything that would let her contact her bank. Anyway I Was asked with about 5 mins to prepare to take her class in the afternoon. Then I turn and see a crying child, and being the only ' responsible adult'(loosely using that Term!) I tried to comfort him in a language he did not understand, which only seemed to make things worse
Eventually my class started and after an aborted attempt to sing old mcdonald, I quickly had them telling me their age and birthdays in English, then ran through shapes and body parts. Not bad I thought!
I should have been prepared for the same thing to happen today. But I foolishly thought "no. they would give me more warning this time!!" How wrong could I have been. Got another class that Milani was meant to be teaching but obviously found something better to do and asked me to do it 5 mins into the lesson! (To be fair I think that she was preparing things for the pre school on Mon day!) Again it went quite well, running through animals and bodyparts. The classes are great though the only problem is that they are seperated by ability in Singala nad Maths. Not english. SO some are brilliant at it and others do not have a good grasp in it in the same class.
Over the past 2 days, the Preschoolers have been doing Papier mache plates ( I have no idea if that is how it is spelt!). Somehting I have not done since p6. They all thoroughly loved it, Though I have never seen a mess like it. Water and paper everywhere!
Last night was the pot luck supper of the local ex-pats. It was our turn to host. There was slight panic as we thought only about 2 people would turn up, but in the end there were 8 of us and there was good conversation and lots of curd for us to eat as had got enough for 12 people!
After school today- went to the salt corporation with some of the teachers. It was quite interesting. Salt is the main industry in Hambantota. No photos cause the way the salt is a closly guarded secret! It would have been better if the Northern Irish weather had not found me at last. After a month of hiding from it, its hunted me down! The past 2 days has seen more rain than i have seen in a month here! It was funny cause it was still quite humid but all the teachers were shivering and i was there in a T-Shirt basking in the hoime like weather!
