Mark here:

29 June - 4 July 2011

After leaving the bat cave, we stopped by Great Sand Dunes National Park - about 100 square miles of sand in the NE corner of the San Luis valley.  It's like a mini Sahara desert - or perhaps just a really big sandbox.

We took a quick hike out into the dunes.  It was very windy and we got sand in every orifice.  After a few steps of walking, our shoes would fill up with the fine sand and quickly squeeze out our toes.  So we had to stop frequently and drop all the sand or the abrasive sand would quickly wear our skin away.  Samson and Quincy liked playing in the sand, until the wind picked up.  Then they would just lay down and refuse to move.  A good time was had by all.

After that, we packed up the dogs and a few gallons of sand and headed to Colorado Springs where my brother and his family live.

Our last few nights we spent with my brother Mike, his wife Gina, and their three children: Kendal, Grant, and Jack.  Had a relaxing time getting my ass kicked at Call Of Duty.  Seems I like to stand around while they calmly walk up behind me and blow my brains out.

We did go out to the Air Force Academy airfield and see the small planes that Mike teaches in.  Very cool.  We watched quite a few takeoffs and landings and eventually, we all got to sit in the cockpit.

After a refreshing two nights there, we packed up the van and headed back to Virginia again taking 2+ long days.  After only driving 3-4 hours tops each day, we logged over 10 hours two days in a row.  The dogs hated it.

We made it back to Blacksburg by lunchtime on the 4th of July - ahead of all the traffic!
