Paradise City
Entry 18 of 31 | show all | print this entry |
After a long bus ride from Merida to Maracaibo ($12), Maracaibo to Maicao ($7), Maicao to Santa Marta ($13), I arrived in sunny Santa Marta. Presently, I am sitting on a computer in Mayamar Hotel here. This place is the defination of a backpacker´s paradise. Even though the entire place is booked, I chose to sleep on the floor tonight for a measily $2 a night. There are so many tanned and beautiful people here, it´s mindblowing. What´s better, it´s 2 blocks from the beach. You can´t beat that! This place reminds me of a dive resort in Thailand. People have pitched tents on the floor here to save money. The internet is free and it has all your barebone needs. For a buck, you get a giant bucket of fresh fruit juice. I have a good feeling about this place.
On the way here, I met a local here in Colombia that deals with import and export of candy between here and Venez (candy candy, not nose candy). He invited me to hang out in the next city over, so I might go over there when I am done with this place, but I dont think that will be for a while. On the way to Maicao from Maracaibo there was about a dozen police stops along the way to check for papers and ask for bribes. We were stopped four times but we didnt fork over any money. Once we got inside Colombia, I noticed a sudden increase in military forces. Apparently the FARC hides in the forests here and there are scrimishes every now and then. So far everyone here have been very nice and helpful. I even ran into the two Canadians here that I met in Pueto Colombia. It´s a small world afterall. I seem to be extremely lucky on where I sleep; there is always a breeze no matter where I go.
Where I stayed:
Mayamar Hotel
