Still here and a little scared
Entry 2 of 31 | show all | print this entry |
I must confess that I am a bit worried and scared about bringing my camera down to S.America with me. I love taking pictures and it's a passion of mine, but I would shit a brick if someone mugged me and took my camera. I would sooner lose my passport than my camera. On top of that, it looks like I will be getting my 70-200mm f/4 professional 'L' lens in time for me to consider bringing it down there with me. You see, if I don't use the lens down there I won't have too many uses for it up here besides sporting events. So I feel that I must use that lens to its up most usage. BUT the lens is big and white and stands out like a sore thumb. Have you ever see a Canon 'L' lens? Those things look like they cost a thousands bucks and they do!! So if I walk around with that thing, I would be a prime target for pickpockets and thieves. I do have a few things going for me though. I am tall, atheltic, have a good head on my shoulders. It wouldn't be the first time I've been in a bad area, shit I wondered around the streets of San Jose and Managua in the dead of night and nothing happened. I guess if I do bring it, I just have to be smart about the whole thing...and maybe get insurance for it. What do you think?
Anyways, I am getting too serious thinking about this crap. I have four days left and the weather is currently 74 degrees in Caracas. I still don't know exactly what I am going to do yet. Probably stay in Caracas for two nights, leave on the 27th and hopefully find a nice beach town to spend New Years at. Who knows though...maybe I'll meet some cool ppl in Caracas and end up spending it there. So the plan right now is to spend around 10 days in Venezuela, 15+ in Colombia, 7 in Ecuador, 7 in Peru and the remaining time in bolivia. We'll see. The more I think about it, the more I believe I need more time. Shit...I spend 15 days in Central America and it felt like a month, now that I have a month and a half, it feels like I have 15 days. It's funny how that works out doesn't it?
On a side note, I saw an episode of Globe Trekker TV last night (my favorite show), and they did a special on India. Oh man, I can't tell you how much I want to go to India. I just feel drawn to that country for some odd reason...it's beyond words. Have you ever felt like you just need to go somewhere...like it's calling you? India and Nepal is that place for me. I don't know why. I decided long ago that I need to spend atleast six months of my life in that region of the world. Possibly more. The culture, food, people, history, everything about it seems strange and wonderful to me. Well...India and the Middle East. Something about Islam and the Arab countries intrique me a great deal as well. Even though I am not religious, I have a great respect for Muslims, Hindus, and the many other religions of that region...oddly enough, I have a very dislike toward Christianity. Maybe it's the bible thumpers, the parent christian groups that complain about what's on TV (which I dont watch anyways, but if I want to see hooters during the Super Bowl, I should be able to see hooters), or maybe it's the often close minded hypocrites that join. Who knows. I'm done ranting.
I hope I get my compactflash cards in time for this trip, otherwise I'll have to break some heads over at eCosts.com. Atleast their sales staff is really really nice ;). I hear California is 77 degrees this time of year. Lucky West Coast people. Don't worry though, in a week I'll be posting stuff that'll make you jealous! Muahahahaha
