Ok, this page is already getting hits and there's nothing of interest on it at all, so I thought I'd at least make a start on changing that!
As the title suggests, on the 20th of August 2008 I officially become an Australian, stand up in front of local council members and swear to be a good Aussie - which I'm pretty sure means drinking lots, having barbecue's and spending lots of time at the beach... She'll be right mate! :o)
Anyway, I'll put more interesting stuff on here as well as photos from the ceremony, and then from there, who knows... More travels around the world as a Scots / Aussie?!?
The day finally rolled round, and despite feeling a bit under the weather thanks to the operation, I was ready to go and take up citizenship of my new country
Sophie, Jon, Jason, Sam and Stu all came along to enjoy the evening with me. We all met at the Town of Vincent Civic Centre on Loftus / Vincent Street and settled in for the speeches and the ceremony. Despite it being only a few weeks away from local election time here in WA, they weren't TOO long-winded and after introducing each other, described just what citizenship means in Australia, not just to the new arivals, but also what they (we?!?) bring to the country too. Very uplifting - honestly!
It was then time to be called up and say the pledge before receiving the paperwork and a citizenship medallion welcoming each of us formally and then after the obligatory photographs it was time to head to the bar and enjoy a few free drinks and nibbles!
(Jason and Jon have decided to try and figure out where each of the upcoming ceremonies are and gatecrash them for free beer and food - not their worst plan! :o)
After that we headed to meet Lorn at Fibber McGees in Leederville and settled in for a gorgeous meal, cold beers and good company. Sadly I think the whole evening was a bit too much for me, with pain-killer avoidance due to the drinking and then the long walk home proving a bit of a stretch and I ended up in far too much pain on Thursday and Friday as a result. Ah well, it was worth it, and now I'm just as Aussie as Jason and Dougal!
Next stop is the Post Office to get my Passport sorted out so I can travel as an Australian! :o)
