Flag of Peru  , Ica,
Thursday, July 27, 2006

The cessna plane steeply banked throwing us against the window as the pilots voice crackled through our head sets pointing out the strange markings on the barren desert far below us outside the window our faces were pressed against.
The Nazca lines in the desert of peru were created several thousand years ago by the Nazca indians long before the Incas came on the show. Looking like some child chalk drawings on a pavement there are 100s of lines and about 70 symbols over a 525km stretch of desert, some being several hundred metres in size they can only be seen from high above, they resemble many different forms, parrots, spiders,a wierd looking humanoid and our favourite the monkey. Many different theories abound as to what they were for, the most popular theory being that they were ritual walkways to appease the gods and bring rain to the dry lands, my favourite being that they were alien landing strips. Either way it is truly astounding to see the size and detail of these symbols and then realise it was done by ancient indians who could not have seen what they were doing.
