We flew into Auckland at 5am on new Year's Eve feeling very confused about the day, date and time. The 30th December never happened for us as we crossed the date line. We checked into Auckland Central Backpackers which was a fab hostel and organised hire of a camper van.
We managed to meet up with Hannah, whom we had met in Ecuador, and her friend Jet and a couple of guys, Andrew and John who were staying at our hostel. The six of us headed out into Auckland to celebrate new year. We were all really impressed by the atmosphere and by the fact that at 10.30pm we could still get a table outside by the quay. At midnight we watched fireworks being set off from the Skytower which dominates the city and then it was back to the hostel bar for more drinks and dancing. Finally collapsed with jetlag at 3am.
Awake on New Year's Day ridiculously early so headed for a walk through the city to Mount Eden. As we were checking the map at the bottom of the hill, a policeman asked if we were lost. When we asked for the quickest way up, he opened his car door and gave us a lift!! Less than 48 hours in the country and we have already had a brush with the law! Mount Eden is a 200m volcano that looks over the city and there were fantastic views over the harbour and outlying islands. The weather was warm and sunny and it seemed strange to be well into 2007 when the UK was only just getting ready to celebrate.

Glad new zealand is living up to expectation! Our new group is certainly a change, average age has doubled! Getting used to it slowly though, not the same without all you lot.
New years was awesome - i managed to keep my clothes on thios time. janine got in a fight with three Kumuka girls over some cheese, she´s covered in bruises! We´re in Bariloche at the mo, all very pretty and alot like aany ski town in europe, but then you´d know that! LÑeaving for the ferry tomo, early start as usual - bet you don´t miss them!
