Another night of camping on the beach, this time at Puerto Inca. The location was spectacular with rocky headlands and crashing waves. Only a few hardy souls ventured into the water as it is very cold due to the Humbolt current. It was too cold for all those macho Aussie males but 3 of the UK contingent, (us included)made it in, hardened from swimming in the English Channel! Supper was another barbecue of steak marinated in coca cola!

Then it was up to Arequipa leaving sea level behind. It is a stunning city with a backdrop of volcanoes. An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the city a couple of days ago but there has been nothing since we arrived.... so far! We have been advised to stand in doorways if we feel a tremble!

10 years ago the frozen remains of a girl were found on the summit of the near by volcano Ampato. She has been identified as an Inca sacrificial victim and 3 further children have subsequently been found. We went to the museum which houses the body of "Juanita" and the offerings found with her. It was a fascinating story and we had a wonderful guide. Still, I feel sorry for Juanita and wonder if she would be happier back up on the mountain rather than in a glass deep freeze.

We then wandered to the Monestary of Santa Catalina which is 20,000m sq complex. When it was founded it was more of a party house for rich girls until the pope sent a strict nun to sort things out. It was a maze of streets and rooms all painted in beautiful colours and with geraniums to rival those at 137!

We have also experienced some culinary delights here. last night we tucked into Alpaca which was beautiful and also Guinea Pig or Cuy (sorry Kate). Rather disappointed by the GP as it came deep fried rather like KFC! Tasted good though if a bit bony!
