After a long truck ride south through the desert we got to Huanchaco, a small fishing and beach resort which is also the site of a large number of ruins. We stayed in a lovely hotel which was a nice change after camping on the beach and allowed us to get rid of all that sand in our clothes.
We were given a guided tour of Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimu empire and the largest adobe city in the world. It was built 700 years ago and the scale was amazing, covering 28 sq km and this was the second smallest of 9 separate walled cities. Then it was off to visit Huacas de la luna (the temple of the moon) built over 6 centuries up to 600AD. This was a massive structure which was extended every time there was a new ruler so there remains a real maze of rooms which are still being excavated. Whilst we were there we saw the famous peruvian hairless dogs! See picture!
In the afternoon we walked along the sea front to see the totora, traditional reed fishing boats that are still used today. They are paddled by sitting astride them like a horse. Mark went in for a surf but conditions and the water quality was not up to Montanita - roll on Oz for some further opportunities! More thumbnails ...
