Everyone in Australia kept telling us how much we'd like New Zealand because it's 'just like England' - didn't sound too appealing to us, but we understood what they meant when we got to Christchurch. It's centred around a river and does feel quite a lot like Oxford or Cambridge - which is a little strange as we're about as far away as we can be.
It's a lovely town to wander through. We found a great cosy little hostel - Chester St backpackers - on the outskirts of town. It feels pretty cold here though - which is a bit of a problem as we are going to be spending the next 14 nights in a camper van as we drive around south island. At least it's cheap as we've hired it at a special cheap winter rate of only 10 pounds a day which helps the budget. It's hired from Wicked Campers who spay paint all of their vans with different designs - so we're quite excited about what ours will look like. A girl in our hostel just told us that the engine exploded on the van she hired from wicked - which is just a little worrying.
