It was nice to get back on dry land when we arrived in Flores. Although we got almost immediately back on another boat to travel to Surabaya - a tiny island with bungalows right on the beach about an hour away from the mainland. A few people from the boat trip came through as well and we all spent some lazy days snorkelling and reading books on the beach. Even after so much time on different beaches - it still feels like paradise to lie in bed and listen to the sea outside. This was one of the prettiest islands that we've been to and the people running the bungalows were really friendly. They also cooked some great food - especially gado gado - vegetables with peanut sauce - although we did have to learn to order food at least 2 hours before we were hungry!

After a few days we headed back to the port town to Labaun-bajo and did some great diving in the marine park around Komodo. We saw some turtles and sharks as well as some crazy looking fish - including a frog fish that looked like he'd been made out of plastacine, and some tiny sea horses. We were also really lucky and got the chance to snorkel with Giant Manta rays. They are huge - up to 2 tonne in weight and 6m wide - and look like enormous bats in the sea.

We wanted to see another volcano called Kelimutu, but didn't have time to get there before our flight back to Bali, so instead just took a trip to Rutueng, which we hoped would be a pretty little town perched on the edge of the mountains. After Dalat in Vietnam we really should have known better than to expect such things. Rutueng is a fairly charmless large town - definitely not worth the bone shaking 5 hour bus ride to get there. Especially as the road there was full of sharp corners which had several of the locals being sick down the side of the bus. Once there we did a bit of walking and then headed back early to Labaun-bajo.

We still had a few days to kill till our short flight back to Bali so decided to use our time wisely and spend it on another picture postcard island beach.
