Spent the last 10 days in the highlands above San Jose and the rugged south east. Saw a volcano erupting magma, a fantastic sight at night, while sat in hot thermals baths with a cold beer. Tried to climb another volcano but the clouds came in so we had to abandon that plan. The storm was set to last for 3 days so we decided to head south Pacific coast and catch some rays...

3 hours turned into 8 hours, we changed our minds again and ended up in the Osa Peninsula, 4 hours down dirt roads. After almost going off the edge of the road twice, and a puncture later, we arrived at the small backwater of Puerto Jimenez, the springboard for trips into Corcovado National Park, reputed to be the richest in the region.

Rare Scarlet Macaws interrupted breakfast as they feasted on wild almonds in the trees above, as we planned our trip. The 2 hr drive to the end of the track, followed by a 3km hike along the beach in a rain storm which lasted most of the night. Camping near the beach, we could see the ocean as soon as you wake up and were surrounded by wildlife. A fantastic place to visit but difficult to get to which keeps most people away.
