After our detour to the north, we clocked up a lot of mile in the south. The Pan American Highway (stretching from Canada to Patagonia) was great but we soon were back on potholed monstrosities. We passed loads of volcanoes, I'll be bored of them soon, and off to the Pacific coast. We had heard of a little restaurant on the cliffs a 15 km north of the only town. Of course the road was a mere dirt track and our car wasn't quite up to it but we were up for the mini adventure. 30 degree climbs and huge ruts were ok but wooden homemade bridges were a little scarry! Eventually, we got to the restaurant and saw the Pacific, as calm as a mill pond... the restaurant was closed all week. As we nosed around the guard approached, with a gun of course! Practised our Spanish on him and left. We had come this far north that we carried on up the coast a mere 50 km on dirt tracks, no signs, just the odd farmer to ask. Most had no idea where the nearest town was, so we used our compass most of the time.
Stayed the night in Granada, a much nicer colonial town, and had the best meal so far: a rolled filet steak. Drove around a couple more volcanoes most are closed on a Monday, but found one open. Drove (Emma was pleased) to the top and peered over into the crater. You have to reverse into the parking bays incase it goes off. After 10 minutes of poisonous fumes we headed off! That has been our volcano experience so far. A Little disappointed but i am determined to conquer one on foot... watch this space!
