We were so fed up with the heat, filth and grime that we booked a taxi to the airport for 4.30am, to sit there all day and find a flight to Panama, having heard it was great. But then at midnight we changed our minds and decided to stay in Guatemala another week and head to the highlands. We arrived in Antigua on Easter Sunday, one of the busiest times of the year and eventually found a place to stay. Emma's criteria was an en suite, mine was a terrace with a view of at least volcanoes... we got both!
Watched the Easter Parade, too catholic and morbid for me, but quite impressive. Huge carpets or coloured sawdust and flowers adorned the streets, for the procession to walk over. A few monks and nun looking characters and lots of kids in traditional costumes marched morbidly. Then 40 odd suckers carried a massive float with the resurrected Christ on it... what's wrong with wheels?? I'm glad we weren't here for the full week of celebrations!
Off to climb and active volcano tomorrow, able to peer into the crater and see the lava flows....
