Arrived at this tiny backwater in the baking heat from the Mexican Border. We had the prospect of walking 3 miles in the midday sun (only mad dogs and English) but luckily we managed to hitch a ride with one of the locals. We had decided to stay in one of the 3 lodges in the reserve. Or course I chose the cheapest, which was not to Emnma's delight when she saw the palm thatched roof. All she could think about was how many animals were alive in it. I had to subtly kill any I saw... then I took a shower and 3 small frogs jumped out! I decided not to kill them but tell her about them. They then became her friends! We also had a gecko for company, which ate as many mozis as he could. I'm going to have invest in a mozi net so that we can stay in these rustic locations again!
In the morning got up at 5.30, far too early after a restless night of killing bugs, but have to be early to see all the wildlife. We drove about 1/2 hour to the creek and then got into a boat and were taken upstream for and hour or so. It was so peaceful and we saw several rare birds incl. the Pygmy Kingfisher and several hawks and eagles. 8 foot crocs showed their snouts every now and again.
Then we return via a small Mayan site which was being excavated by some archeologists from the US. they showed us around and talked about their finding. It was very interesting to see it in the process of being discovered. They were very informative and keen to show us around. At last I have a good thing to saw about the Americans. I guess it was a long time in Cuba which harboured anti US-sentiment!
