From Campeche we decided to head into the depths of the jungle to see a few more Mayan cities. Ended up staying in a dive of a town but convenient for the sites. Hired a taxi for the day and headed 200km south towards the Guatemalan border to see Calakmul. Due to itīs remoteness and difficulty in getting there, we had the city to ourselves.
We clambered around the ruins and climbed the highest temples. A really peaceful place deep in the jungle but excruciatingly hot - 38 degrees.
We really put ourselves through it that day. We did a whistle stop tour of 2 other cities, smaller and similarly deserted but with differing architecture. After a while it all blurs into one. Itīs a tough life being a tourist - I long for an air-conditioned office!
