After a couple days of chilling in Merida we got on our first bus and headed south to the old walled town of Campeche. It is reputed that the cocktail was created here in the 16th Centrury by the pirates - best to check it out... Spent 3 days in this charming little town with pastel coloured houses and massive fortifications. Stupidly went to a Son and Lumiere show by the city walls - very cheesy affair! Visited the Mayan Ruins of Edzna on one day, taking the chicken bus from the market for a couple of hours into the jungle. There were only 5 people there all day so we had it to ourselves. Beautifully preserved and great views over the surrounding jungle from the top of the pyramid, which I cannily persuaded Emma to climb.
