Bye Bye Bolivia, Hello Peru
Entry 27 of 50 | show all | print this entry |
Mark 25/4: ANZAC Day Suitably woke at dawn to get ready for our departure from Bolivia and into Peru. There was a little bit of confusion to begin with as we were booked in seats 51 & 52, however, when getting on board the bus seats 51 & 52 did not exist, but were instead Baños (Non Funciono). If there was one way to fire up Becs first thing in the morning then having booked 2 seats on a completely full bus only for them to be taken up by the toilet was it. Fortunately we managed to get onto the bus in the newly renumbered seats 54 & 57. And it was out of Bolivia with little border hassle, quick walk to the Peru border, with little hassle and we were in. A 3 hour drive followed and we got the first taste of Peruvian roads, it seems that they don´t employ maintenance staff, so when there is a rockslide covering part of the road, its just first in best dressed to get around it. Arrived in Puno, took the most ridiculous taxi ride ever, the guy was about 60 & we had a tiny hatch from the early 70´s which our driver did not seem to know where first gear was (or it was lost in the 90´s at some stage) which with plenty of stops meant quite a jarring ride. But he was a nice chappy. Shame that Puno is a bit of a hole and we are only here to catch the Inkaexpress bus to Cusco tomorrow.
Becs 25/4: Yep a bit of confusion at getting on the bus, apparently it takes 3 different guys to determine that yes in fact there are no seats 51 & 52. As we watched the only 2 buses heading to Puno filling up very quickly I was getting a little agitated at their lack of finding a suitable alternative for us apart from pointing at their clipboard showing that it was all fully booked. Eventually I spoke to the actual bus driver who seemed to know his bus better than anyone else and how many seats he had and told us there were 2 extra seats on the bus than what the agents thought and we were finally directed up the back to the last 2 seats, given our immigration forms for Peru and we were on our way and I could go back to sleep. Arrived in Puno and it lived up to its reputation for being a town that you really could miss but we needed to overnight it here to get our 0730 bus to Cusco as we decided on taking the tourist bus that stops of at various Inca sights on the way. So here we are in Puno for the afternoon/night and after just making it to our Hostal Los Pinos http://hostallospinosinn.com/presentation.html in the worlds oldest taxi (thought we were going to have to get out and help it over the train tracks) we had our first Peruivan meal at Ukuku restaurant which was pretty good of Alpaca for Mark and chicken and rice for me. We wonded the town for about 20min and saw all the sights so here we are catching up on emails. Bring on tomorrow!
