San Francisco was a very cool city and different to anywhere we had been to before in America with a great atmosphere. We stayed in a cool hostel on the edge of China Town which meant we were basically in San Fran's red light district
We did a lot of walking up and down the twisty, steep streets all over the town and the views are really impressive. We only caught a tram once because they are so expensive but somehow we managed to not pay for the trip that we took – bonus. One of the best things we did was to hire bikes and cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge to the other side of the bay – it was a long ride but really worth it. Unfortunately, mine was broken and I kept having to stop and screw the peddles back on. We went through Sausalito, a very cute shoreline village which reminded us of Kalk Bay, and then on to the giant redwood trees before catching the ferry back. The trips to Alcatraz were sold out so we couldn’t go but we walked (and walked) to Golden Gate Park to see the bison and then wandered around Fisherman’s Wharf.
San Francisco is a great place that prides itself in being slightly different. We really enjoyed it and it reminded us of Cape Town, and Kate said that it is definitely where she would most like to live if she had to move to the U.S.
