LADAKH AND NORTHERN INDIA

Ladakh, in the northwestern corner of India, has been called a "Living Museum Of Tibetan Culture". In fact, it did, at one time, make up the western third of ancient Tibet. Lhasa was the epicenter of culture and commerce, but that all changed in the 1950's.

01 Leh and the Surrounding Valley

For many years this ancient land was totally cut off from the outside world until it was finally opened up to outside travelers in the late 1970's. Ladakh's main city, Leh, was, and still is, the military and administrative center for northern India. Indian army helicopters and air force jets take off from the airport at Leh every morning, to watch over the sensitive borders with China to the north, and Pakistan to the west. This is the same airstrip that handles the many commercial jets that now serve this remote area.
